450+ Free Google Certificates and Badges [2026 List]

Google runs four separate learning platforms — Skillshop, Cloud Skills Boost, Play Academy, and the Google Developers platform — and between them, over 450 courses include a free certificate or badge. No catch, no hidden paywall for the credential itself. You complete the course or pass an assessment, and the certificate is yours. This is a complete list of everything free, organized by platform, so you know exactly where to go and what to expect before you start.

:::note[TL;DR]

  • Google Skillshop: 8 free certificates for Google Ads and Analytics tools
  • Google Analytics: 1 free certification (score 80%+ on the assessment)
  • Google Play Academy: 1 free certificate + 60+ short courses
  • Google Cloud Skills Boost: 300+ free skill and completion badges
  • Google Developers: 120+ courses with free badges
  • Google Career Certificates: Paid but financial aid available on Coursera :::

Why bother with Google certificates?

Two reasons. First, Google certificates on your LinkedIn profile are searchable. Recruiters filter for them. A Google Ads certification or Google Analytics certification carries real weight for digital marketing, e-commerce, and growth roles. Second, the Cloud Skills Boost badges are hands-on lab completions — you actually run things in a real GCP environment. That’s different from a quiz-based certificate. For cloud engineering roles, those labs on your profile are more credible than a lot of paid courses.

The certificates that matter most for career purposes: anything from Skillshop (employer-recognized for paid ads roles), Google Analytics certification (standard for marketing analytics), and the Google Cloud Professional certifications (paid exams, but free prep).

Free Google Skillshop Certifications

Google Skillshop is Google’s official training platform for its marketing and business tools. In 2024 they migrated to a new platform. Currently, 8 certifications are free — you pass an assessment, you get the certificate.

The certificates expire annually and need renewal. That’s not a bug; it keeps your skills current since Google Ads and the ad platforms change constantly.

Google Ads Display CertificationSkillshop
Google Ads Video CertificationSkillshop

The Scenario: You’re applying for a PPC specialist role. The job listing says “Google Ads certified preferred.” You’ve run campaigns before but never got the actual certificate. Two evenings on Skillshop. You pass the Search certification, add it to LinkedIn, and now the recruiter’s keyword filter includes you in the results. It’s a checkbox that costs nothing except time.

Free Google Analytics Certification

Google’s Analytics Certification covers Google Analytics 4 (GA4) — the version Google fully transitioned to in 2023. The old Universal Analytics certification is gone.

How it works: Complete the learning modules (videos + readings), then pass the assessment with 80% or higher. Your certificate appears on your Skillshop profile, and you can download it or share directly to LinkedIn.

A few things to know:

  • Some learners report a 24-hour delay before the certificate shows up after passing
  • The certificate is linked to your Google account, not an email — if you change your Google account, the credential doesn’t automatically transfer
  • It’s valid for 12 months

If you work with website data, run ads, or do any kind of digital analytics, this one is worth the few hours it takes.

Free Google Play Academy Certificate

Google Play Academy is aimed at app and game developers who want to grow on the Play Store. Most of the 60+ courses are short (under 10 minutes) and cover topics like store listing optimization, monetization, and user acquisition.

Courses are available in 10 languages: English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, and Indonesian.

The one free certificate available:

Google Play Store Listing Certificate — Complete the component courses and pass the exam. Allow up to 7 days after passing for the certificate to arrive by email.

The rest of the Play Academy courses don’t have certificates, but they’re short enough that you can knock out a relevant batch in an afternoon.

Free Google Cloud Skills Boost Badges

Google Cloud Skills Boost (formerly Qwiklabs) is where Google’s cloud learning is genuinely good. The platform gives you a live Google Cloud environment for the duration of a lab — you’re running actual commands against real GCP infrastructure, not a simulated sandbox.

Over 300 courses offer a free skill badge or completion badge. The skill badges are the more valuable ones — they require completing a multi-lab challenge at the end.

:::tip Cloud Skills Boost has a free tier that gives access to a limited number of labs per month. For full access to all labs, a subscription is needed. However, many individual courses and their associated badges are accessible on the free tier, particularly the shorter ones. Check the course page for access requirements before starting. :::

Free Google Developer Badges

The Google Developers platform has 1,500+ learning resources, including 120+ structured courses. There’s a free Standard plan. Badges are awarded on course completion — check individual course pages for availability since not every course includes one.

A substantial portion focuses on Android and Flutter development. Some courses prepare you for paid exams (like Android certification).

Google Career Certificates (Coursera) — Not Free, But Close

Google Career Certificates on Coursera are not free — they run $49/month — but financial aid is available and brings the cost to zero if approved. These are the most career-relevant credentials in the Google ecosystem for non-cloud roles:

  • Google Data Analytics Certificate
  • Google IT Support Certificate
  • Google Project Management Certificate
  • Google UX Design Certificate
  • Google Cybersecurity Certificate
  • Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Certificate
  • Google Advanced Data Analytics Certificate
  • Google Business Intelligence Certificate

To apply for financial aid on Coursera, go to the course page, click “Financial aid available” below the enroll button, and fill in the application. Approval usually takes 15 days. It’s genuinely worth applying — the courses are well structured and the certificates are recognized.

What’s actually worth your time?

Not everything on this list deserves equal attention. Here’s an honest take:

High value:

  • Google Ads Search Certification — Required for most PPC/paid media roles. Do this if you run or plan to run Google Ads.
  • Google Analytics Certification — Standard credential for anyone in digital marketing or growth.
  • Cloud Skills Boost AI labs — The Generative AI and LLM intro courses are genuinely good as of 2026. Short, hands-on, and the material is accurate.
  • Google Cloud certification prep courses — Free prep for paid exams that cost $200+. Use these before you spend money on the exam.

Decent for portfolio:

  • Google Developer badges — Good if you’re building Android/Flutter apps and want to show structured learning on your profile.
  • Google Workspace Admin courses — Relevant if you’re targeting IT admin or ops roles that involve Google Workspace management.

Limited value:

  • Google Play Academy courses — Useful if you’re actually publishing apps on Play. Otherwise, not worth optimizing for.
  • Short Workspace courses (Gmail, Slides, etc.) — Fine for personal learning, but these badges don’t carry significant weight on a resume.

The Scenario: You’re a junior developer trying to land your first cloud role. You can’t afford an AWS or GCP certification exam yet. Instead, you spend three weekends on Cloud Skills Boost — working through the Generative AI learning path and the Associate Cloud Engineer prep. You earn six badges. You add them to LinkedIn. Your profile now shows actual hands-on cloud activity, not just a degree. That’s visible signal in a sea of identical resumes.

FAQ

Are these certificates really free, or is there a catch?

The credentials themselves are free. Some platforms (like Cloud Skills Boost) have a subscription for full lab access — but many individual courses and their badges are on the free tier. Skillshop and Google Analytics certifications are completely free with no subscription required.

Do Google Skillshop certifications expire?

Yes. Google Ads certifications from Skillshop are valid for 12 months. You’ll need to retake the assessment annually to keep them active. This isn’t unusual — the platforms change enough that staying current is worth it.

Are Google Cloud Skills Boost badges recognized by employers?

Yes, particularly in cloud and DevOps hiring. The skill badges (which require a challenge lab at the end) carry more weight than the completion badges. Cloud Skills Boost profiles are public and linkable — you can put the URL on your resume or LinkedIn.

Can I put Google Cloud Skills Boost badges on my LinkedIn?

Yes. From your Cloud Skills Boost profile, you can share individual badges directly to LinkedIn as certifications. The badge appears with Google as the issuing organization and a verification link.

What’s the difference between a “completion badge” and a “skill badge” on Cloud Skills Boost?

A completion badge is awarded when you finish all the content in a course. A skill badge requires completing a challenge lab — a timed, unguided lab where you apply what you learned without step-by-step instructions. Skill badges are harder and more valuable as proof of ability.
